Prevention And Coping With Suicidal Feelings

How do I prevent and cope with suicidal feelings?

As an athlete, it is important to understand the signs of suicide and know how to prevent it. The first step in suicide prevention is to recognise the warning signs.

These may include changes in behaviour, such as withdrawal from friends and family, increased alcohol or drug use, low mood, and reckless behaviour. As an athlete you  may also exhibit a sudden decline in performance or lose interest in your sport.

Additionally, if you have experienced a recent injury or loss you may be at an increased risk. If you notice any of these signs in yourself or a teammate, it is important to say or do something. The first step is to reach out for help. This may mean talking to a coach, therapist, or trusted friend or family member.

It is also important to prioritise self-care as an athlete. This may include practicing relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing or meditation, to manage stress and anxiety. Regular exercise, proper nutrition, and adequate sleep are also important for maintaining overall physical and mental health.

As an athlete, it is also important to foster a supportive team culture. This means creating an environment where teammates can openly discuss mental health and seek help without fear of stigma or judgment. Coaches and team leaders can play a critical role in promoting mental health by encouraging open communication and providing resources for support.

In addition to individual and team efforts, there are also broader initiatives aimed at suicide prevention in the sports community. These include mental health awareness campaigns, suicide prevention training for coaches and athletes, and partnerships with mental health organisations.
