Tips For Managing Depression

There are many ways you can help yourself in managing your depression...

  • Wanting to be on your own and avoiding social contact is a common symptom of depression. The downside is that it perpetuates a cycle of loneliness and isolation. Seek people you trust and know well, someone who will support you and not judge you. Take small steps to establishing a support social network.

  • Although you may not feel like doing anything, find something to do that makes you feel good about yourself. Here are some suggestions, going for a walk and noticing your surroundings, reading a book and discussing it with a friend, listening to music. Find an activity that brings you joy.

  • For non-sport persons, exercise and sports is a great way to connect with your body. For athletes, review your training and physical exercise routines and check if it is leading to feelings of hopelessness, and negative thoughts and feelings. Check that there is a balance with the other aspects of your life.

  • Review your sleep hygiene. Avoid drinking caffeine and snacking before going to bed, don’t take electronic devices in to the bedroom, ensure your bed, mattress and pillow are right for you. Most importantly maintain a healthy sleep routine and leave any uncomfortable conversations for the next day.
