Self-Harm in Athletes

Explore

People often see athletes as strong, resilient, and mentally tough. However, the pressure to perform, the demands of training and competition, and the public scrutiny can take a toll on our mental health. Self-harm can be a way for some athletes to cope with the stress and pressure of their sport.

There is limited research on self-harm among athletes, but studies have shown that athletes are at a higher risk of experiencing depression and anxiety compared to non-athletes. A bob-sleigh athlete, Rebekah Wilson, said “It goes on a lot more than we allow ourselves to think”.

In addition, athletes who have experienced physical or emotional abuse or trauma are more likely to engage in self-harm behaviours.

“At my lowest, I was cutting myself with scissors every day that I was injured.”
